Breast pumps for pregnant women and new moms

Pregnant women and new moms are eligible for a breast pump at no cost if they are going to breastfeed their infant. Members can request a breast pump up to 30 days before their due date and up to 56 days after their baby is delivered.

Members who want to get a breast pump must follow the steps below:

  1. Get a breast pump prescription from your Ob/Gyn.
    • Fill the prescription for a breast pump at any Horizon NJ Health participating Durable Medical Equipment (DME) supplier. To find a DME provider:
      • Search our Doctor & Hospital Finder
        • Select Horizon NJ Health then choose Other Healthcare Services.
Enter Durable Medical Equipment Supplier in the search bar.
      • Call Member Services at 1-800-682-9090.
      • Contact your Mom’s GEMS Care Manager.
      • TTY callers can use 711

There are two types of breast pumps covered with a prescription:

  • Manual: Covered for each pregnancy
  • Standard electric: Covered once every three years

Rental of a hospital-grade electric breast pump must be requested through prior authorization and will be approved if considered medically necessary.

Horizon NJ Health also provides child birth-breast feeding counseling. Please contact your GEMS Care Manager for more information.
