Skin Cancer Awareness Español

As the largest organ in the human body, your skin is your first defense against outside elements, like the sun's harmful rays. Your skin also helps regulate what's going on inside your body. Proper care of your skin is vital to your overall health.

The sun can have damaging effects on your skin, leading to skin aging and skin cancer. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 70 percent of American adults do not properly protect themselves from the sun's dangerous ultraviolet rays. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States.

Horizon NJ Health encourages you to protect your skin and your children's skin all year long. Here are a few things you can do:

  • Wear a hat and protective clothing when outdoors.
  • Stay in the shade between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. — the sun's peak hours.
  • Generously apply sunscreen at least 15 to 30 minutes prior to sun exposure and reapply frequently.

Your skin also reflects what you eat. A poor diet can weaken your digestive system and, in turn, translate into a skin condition. By taking care of your skin, you will not only look good, but also feel good!
